The Truth about Stone Temple Pilots “Plush”

Stone Temple Pilots' hit song "Plush" was inspired in part by a news story in the band's hometown of San Diego, California about a missing young woman who was later found dead.

Lead singer Scott Weiland has described the lyrics as a "metaphor for a lost obsessive relationship." The song's instantly recognizable chord structure was inspired by bassist Robert DeLeo's love of ragtime music.

The most widely broadcast version of the song is an acoustic rendition that was performed on the MTV metal show Headbangers Ball after the band had finished a month of concerts opening for Rage Against the Machine.

The relaxed and poignant version of the song made #39 on the US Airplay chart and stirred a great deal of interest in the band. "Plush" won the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal, and the video directed by Josh Taft earned the band the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist in 1993.
