🎵 On our recent mothers day episode of the song swap showdown we discussed the song, “Mother” by Danzig. This clip was taken from our discussion into the meaning behind Glenn Danzig’s hit song.
It’s been revealed that the lyrics may speak to a rebellion against perceived censorship. Inspired by Tipper Gore’s involvement with the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) which regulated music content for children, the song could be seen as a call for artistic freedom.
Formed after Misfits’ split, Glenn Danzig’s eponymous band saw “Mother” gain initial traction in 1988 amongst hardcore music fans. But it wasn’t until 1993, when the song was remixed and re-released, that it reached a wider audience. Marking an unusual moment in music history, the song broke into the mainstream rock charts, reaching #43 in March 1994 - a time when grunge reigned supreme.
